06:49 pm - The National Book Awards and the Narrative Function of Werewolves
I haven't been posting a lot, because I'm one of the judges for the young people's National Book Award this year, which means I have been reading several books a day, every day. It's been a lot of fun to have a reason to just read for hours and hours (and hours), but it has kept me from updating LJ.

But this past weekend, at ReaderCon, a discussion was had where we tried to identify the narrative function of werewolves. I thought maybe this would make you guys laugh.

We decided that the Narrative Function of the Werewolf is:

1. To have weird pack dynamics (sometimes really weird)
2. To be a metaphor for suppressed rage
3. To die and turn back into someone unexpected
4. To ravage the countryside
5. To lose in a love triangle with a vampire (why do they always lose? why?)

Got any more? How about the narrative function of the vampire?

03:33 pm - My Word Balloon podcast interview
"Comix aren't just for comix readers anymore."

http://media.libsyn.com/media/wordballoon/WBdeanhaspiel08.mp3

John Siuntres was kind enough to interview me this week over the phone for his excellent comix podcast website, Word Balloon, where I discuss digital comix, my Eisner Award nominated Billy Dogma, Street Code, Next-Door Neighbor, my collaborations with Jonathan Ames on THE ALCOHOLIC, Jeff Parker on X-MEN FIRST CLASS, and my upcoming kids book, MO & JO: FIGHTING TOGETHER FOREVER, with underground comix legend, Jay Lynch, for Francoise Mouly's Toon Books, and much more. The podcast runs 54:25.

02:20 pm - Digg People
Man, Digg people are dumb. Or should I say most of the commentors are way stupid, like so stupid they paid for they myspace account. It got like 600 Diggs so that means at least some of them are pretty good.

One of my favorite stupid things people do on Internet is type "CAN I HAVE MY 30 SECONDS BACK." Dude, you're dicking around on internet, it's not like you were gonna do anything worthwhile with that 30 seconds.

10:46 am - Shock! (But not really)
It's been awhile since I did one of these silly things...

You are a Firebender!

Firebender
The first firebenders were taught by Dragons. To the Fire Nation, fire represented destruction and anger was central to firebending. True firebending involves balance, emotional stability and inner calm, as fire truly represents life. Firebending draws its power from the sun and is stronger during the day, strongest during Sozin’s comet which arrives every hundred years. Firebending is not possible during a solar eclipse.

10:18 am - Koren Shadmi

Koren Shadmi's work makes my teeth ache with its attractiveness. I've been seeing his work around for ages, in a bumper crop of disparate publications, and it never fails to grab me. Everything is warm and human but still crisp.

So this week I finally stumbled across his site and, oh hi, his livejournal.

09:00 am - Synopses of movies I haven't seen, based only on their posters: Swing Vote

Based on the font and the logo design, I would guess that Swing Vote is some kind of high-protein diet shake, like Ensure. The words "Swing Vote" imply something having to do with national politics and something having to do with easy sex. The picture of Kevin Costner, on the other hand, connotes neither. Instead, it says, "Come see Swing Vote -- Kevin Costner is in it, and he would be oh so happy if you did. Why look, he's turning on the charm. He's even got all dressed up for you in his ratty faded t-shirt and his backwards baseball cap, and gone a month without shaving."

So I'm guessing that Swing Vote is about a middle-aged man who has trouble finding the time to eat right, who turns to diet shakes and national politics to help him dress better and learn to shave.hitcounter

Oh, and there are some tiny other people in the movie.

11:49 am - Avatar
The finale of Avatar: The Last Airbender? AWESOME. There is so much I haven't seen of that series, but of the stuff I have seen, I have to say, that 10 minute segment of Avatar vs. Volcano remains my favorite mind-blowing moment. I should also say congrats and well done to the writers, producers, directors, artists, voice actors, everyone who worked on that show and made it so awesome. there is a best Buy opening up down the road from me, so I expect I'll be getting the whole series soon.

And I decided to take a meme:

You are an Airbender!

Airbender

The Sky Bison taught the first airbenders how to bend the air around them. While they cannot fly, airbenders can soar in the air for long distances by using a glider. Most important to airbenders is the concept of non-aggression. When they fight, they do not attack but defend themselves through circular movements that confuse their opponents.

11:41 am - X-men First Class
Awhile back, I received a nice email from Jeff Parker, creator of THE INTERMAN and writer of Marvel Comics' AGENTS OF ATLAS and X-MEN FIRST CLASS, inviting me to draw a 6pp XFC story featuring The Beast and Ice Man for their special Halloween issue. Jeff asked my what some of my favorite horror films were and one of the movies I mentioned, THE THING, is what we settled on paying homage to. Here is the official solicitation for the upcoming October release:

GIANT-SIZE X-MEN: FIRST CLASS #1
Written by JEFF PARKER & ROGER LANGRIDGE
Penciled by MICHAEL CHO, ROGER LANGRIDGE, NICK KILISLIAN, DEAN HASPIEL, DAVID WILLIAMS & JEFF PARKER
Cover by JEFF PARKER, KEVIN NOWLAN & BRAD ANDERSON

Just in time for Halloween, The Beast starts conducting investigations into his own "X" files around the world! Are there aliens among us or things even weirder? Featuring special guest-star artists and classic material too! And emboldened by the safety net of Nowlan inks, Parker even drew the cover!

48 PGS./Rated A …$3.99

Before I start laying out any story, I like to do some quick sketches of the main characters. Here are some initial drawings I did that will probably change by the time I do the final art:

10:09 am - SDCC report: Preview night
This year instead of no Comic Con update at all I'll try do a series of small updates.

Opening day was a blast. Setting up was surprisingly easy compared to previous years. Maybe because we've got it down to a science. Or maybe we just expected it to be awful, but it wasn't really. We had almost everything shipped directly to the floor, and the rest of the stuff was brought in via Chris Yates' car to the convention loading dock, which was an adventure in itself.

At any rate we started setting up after breakfast and I hardly left the booth for 10 seconds from morning 'til 10 at night. I basically haven't said hi to anyone yet - except those who stopped by the booth - but I'm sure that'll change.

Look whose book actually came in time! I got this sucker in the mail at the hotel the night before.

As usual when the floor opened up, we started selling and didn't stop. Preview night has become pretty much a regular night at SDCC, or a very busy day at any other show. As usual Dumbrella is a T-shirt selling powerhouse. But I mostly stood by the books, doing signings and talking to readers. I sold a ton of books for Preview Night! This bodes well for the rest of the show. Which is good because I brought way more books than I thought I'd need.

At the end of the day I realized I was absolutely fucking exhausted. We went out for dinner and drinks, and then Rich and I retired on the early side to maybe - maybe - catch up on sleep.

More photos behind the cut )

Today, we are doing a panel at 2:30 in room 3. So please come by if you're reading LJ before the show.

08:58 am - E.W.Jr quotes from comingsoon.net @ comicon
(link)

Wright: ...It looks likely that I will do "Scott Pilgrim" next and then "Ant-Man" straight afterwards.

CS: You have a great cast that's been announced for "Scott Pilgrim" so far.
Wright: There's some more interesting people buzzing around as well. It's going to be a big ensemble, that film, and there's a lot of fun people we've already been talking to, so there's more to come with that.

CS: [Bryan Lee O'Malley] still has a couple more issues of the story to finish, so have you talked to him about where the story is going to go so you can include some of that in the movie?
Wright: The only book that isn't written is the sixth, but our film takes on a slightly different trajectory after the second book and it includes elements from books three, four and five. In some cases, Bryan has used lines in his books from our first draft of the screenplay (chuckles) which is like strange performance-style transference, and it's been brilliant being able to pick his brains throughout this. On one hand, it's a very very faithful adaptation and on the other hand, it definitely molds events from those books into a three-act movie structure, so that's been interesting.

CS: And you know that Mike Cera has this insane fanbase of women, which you might have seen at Comic-Con last year, but it's gotten even bigger since "Superbad" came out. Essentially, every single woman wants him.
Wright: Michael Cera? Yeah. I know he's got a lot of growing up he can do if he wanted to.

CS: Once you figure out if the strike is happening, do you know where you'll shoot the movie? Would you go back to the U.K. for it or do it here?
Wright: No, it wouldn't be in the U.K. It'll either be here or Toronto. It would be really crucial to kind of shoot in Toronto, so that's what I'm aiming to do.

No. I won't be at San Diego Comicon.

Yes. THE DARK KNIGHT makes BATMAN BEGINS look like a lost Adam West episode.
